An epic few days with The Threads Orchestra

Last week saw me playing double bass and workshop leading with the Threads Orchestra. This jam packed few days saw us recording the rhythm section parts for Jon Brigg's new album "Ranch" at Huddersfield University, several workshops and a culmination concert at Hymers College in Hull and a full Threads Orchestra concert at Ropery Hall in Barton-on-Humber.

Wednesday - Recording

This was a challenging session due to time restraints and saw the Threads rhythm section (Kit Downes; Keys, Chris Montague; Guitar, Kris Wright; Drums and myself on Double Bass) recording our parts for the strings to be overdubbed at a later date. We were joined by ex Loose Tubes member, Dai Pritchard on Soprano Sax, who played beautifully.

A few photos from the session:

Thursday - Hymers College Workshop

The day began with a concert for the Junior school, which I presented. There were some really fantastic observations and magical ideas shared by students about our music, I think that we will be planning a Key Stage 2 project very soon.

We then moved to the senior school to work with both the intermediate and senior string ensembles. The repertoire used was "Libertango" by Astor Piazzolla, "Wheelbarrow Walk" by Michael Nyman and the affectionately titled "Hurdy Gurdy" by Valentin Clastrier.

Each 'section' of Threads took a different role within the workshop, the strings sharing wonderful insights into bowing, articulation, interpretation and extended techniques, Kit and Chris working in smaller groups specifically looking at improvisational techniques and Kris gave a really great presentation on layering rhythmic cells using extended techniques while I led from the back!

Kris gave a really inspiring analogy to the students about improvising using extended techniques in an open section at the beginning of Libertango. It went something like this:

Kris: "you've all heard of strong and wrong right?"

Participants: (laughter)

Kris:  Guess that's a yes then...When you play any music think about if you were in a race, the gold medal is strong and right. the silver medal is strong and wrong. The bronze medal, finishing a long way behind the gold and silver medals is weak and right. Think two thoroughbred horses against a three-legged donkey, it's that much of a difference...

...With Libertango, there is no written material so how can it be right? or wrong? so that just leaves us with strong or weak playing, and we know what medals we get for those...!

The next day we received this photo from the school

Right_and_strong

The day ended with a culmination concert with all of the strings performing alongside Threads, this was a great concert with some wonderful playing. I had a wonderful time with my bass section, there is nothing quite like a 5 strong bass section playing heavy pizz in Libertango!

Friday - Golf and a concert at Ropery Hall!

After a fun night out nothing clears away the cobwebs like a round of golf, lots of fun and frustration (mentioning no names!) was had, it's a nice time of year to be outside (wrapped up warm of course!) and the season was readily witnessed in the changing shades of the flora.

The evening saw a fantastic concert to an almost sold out house. Threads were joined by two fantastic 'deps' in Fran Pye from the BBC Phil on Violin and my old friend and piano virtuoso, Rob Barron. It was great to play with Rob again after such a long time, both he and Fran played amazingly. Ropery Hall is a really beautiful venue with a great sound and a fantastic staff who really looked after us. Many thanks to everyone who came along and to all the staff. See you again next year!

Thanks so much to Adam Robinson for his amazing playing and for organising and managing the group and to the rest of the people who played and made this such a fun few days:

Huddersfield University, Hymers College, Ropery Hall, Rob Barron, Jon Brigg, Martin Couzin, Kit Downes, Chris Montague, Dai Pritchard, Fran Pye, Kris Wright and family and Semay Wu

This was an action packed few days, it's always magical when Threads get together so check out the website for more details of our work in the field of music education and for live dates.

Modern Times - Live Score

Modern_times_-_chaplin_and_rus

After a busy couple of weeks I thought I'd write and let you know what I've been up to. I recently headed back up to Leeds, my home for over 10 years, to perform on Turntable and Electronics with a fantastic ensemble that saw us improvising a live score to Charlie Chaplins "Modern Times". You can read one of my previous posts about the event by clicking here.

The drummer from the group, the legendary Joost Hendrickx, has written about the event over on his blog and makes some very nice comments regarding my performance. Read the post here. This was a really fantasic experience and thanks to everyone in the group for their playing and to everyone at Musiquarium, especially Jam, who worked tirelessly to make this event work both sonically and visually.

We were supported by the incredibly beautiful group Zither Me Timbres, a duo of Celctic Harp and Zither, really lush and slowly evolving landscapes, well worth a listen. I can't find any online info but if anyone else can please post a link in the comments section at the bottom of this post.

I'll post more media as it arrives, which will include a mini documentary about the process and the full movie with our soundtrack cut to it.

Enjoy some photos from the event taken by Mila Dores and ?Lucy Barker?

Look what arrived in the post today!

Casio_sk1
Today I finally received my Casio SK-1, known as the cheapest sampler in the world! It samples at a mighty 8 bit and has a sample length of 1.4 seconds, it has a really gritty sound and you've probably already heard it in the music of Beck, Portishead, Autechre, Nine Inch Nails and my reason for purchasing it, turntablist Philip Jeck. Jeck uses it to sample fragments of records and create those beautifully lush landscapes.

This was originally intended as a toy keyboard.I remember my cousin having one and being amazed at being able to record my voice and play melodies, strange how toys become part of your pallette. I'll post the results soon!

Next week I'll be traveling northwards to spend a few days playing Double Bass and  working with The Threads Orchestra. The album will be recorded at Huddersfield University and we will be touring the material in the spring of 2012.

For this recording Threads will be joined by Dai Pritchard on soprano sax, who performed with Threads at the Bradford Mela.

You can read about Jonathan's compositional process for this album on his Threads CD blog and watch a short interview below:

Art as Music

Screen_shot_2011-10-29_at_19

This week I've been working with Ignite, Wigmore Hall Learning's outreach ensemble and 28 young instrumentalists aged between 11 and 16 on Wigmore Hall's half-term course "Art as Music".

The Inspiration for the project was taken from the work of artists such as Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock, as well as the music of Morton Feldman and John Cage.

I was guesting with Ignite using turntables, amplified surfaces and found objects, radios and live electronics. The ensemble worked with several smaller groups to create new works and came together to perform an interpretation of Stockhausen's "Japan", retitled as "Upwards Rain" on stage at Wigmore Hall.

The small group I worked consisted of Radio Quintet, Turntables and Sampler entitled "Radio Band, 1'33"(ish)"

Screen_shot_2011-10-29_at_20

The other small groups performed versions of Julian Ferraretto's "Sudoko" and "Musiek" by Henrik Colding-Jørgensen.

This was a fanstastic two days which saw the participants dealing with advanced concepts and realising them with high levels of musicianship and maturity.

It was a pleasure to collaborate with Ignite and I hope to be able to work with them again soon.

Special thanks to Ignite, Kate Whitaker from Wigmore Hall Learning and everyone at the Hall.

The Sound House

Wh_thesoulofmusic-300x296
During my time as Trainee Animateur with Wigmore Hall Learning, I was fortunate to work on a 9 month long project, The Sound House, with the legendary composer/sound artist Duncan Chapman

The Sound House is an online project for the Wigmore Hall that draws on their extensive archive. We collaborated with Dotank Studios to create a series of “rooms” that contain sounds and music relating to the Hall, its historical context and what happens there now.

The website is now online:

http://www.wigmore-hall.org.uk/learning/resources/soundhouse

Amongst the things to find on the site are

  • A timelapse film and audio of the auditorium during one day
  • A series of pieces created with students from Pimlico Academy taking archive programmes as the source
  • A piece composed from different applause recordings in the hall
  • A series of recordings of the Heath Quartet in different acoustics
  • A piece composed from interviews with artists
  • A piece created from the sounds of tuning up

Please do share your thoughts about this online experience.

Working with Duncan really helped to find my voice as an artist, and to believe in my creative output - after too long throwing away and editing out more than I kept I learned to make it worry about it later!
